My Winter Farmers Market Trip From This Morning!

We ventured into the snowy mush outside this morning and went to my local winter farmer’s market. I really wanted some local honey and some farm eggs. I have a tendency to splurge on things while I’m there. Like how could I possibly resist Spicy Peach BBQ Sauce and fresh churned honey butter (which btw was DELISH on toast)? The Cheese and Cracked Black Pepper bread is going to go with 2 dinners (tonight and another later next week).

In Spring-Fall you can get some fabulous produce at great prices this way. Do you shop at farmers markets for items? What do you like to get there? If you don’t know where to find them, this website here will help you locate any and all sources of local products by putting in your zip code.

My Bloom 50% Off Trip Picture, Notes and Update!

So I made it out to my local Bloom this afternoon that is closing. I talked with a friend this morning on the phone and she mentioned that the Bloom/ Food Lion closings are being described as “The Black Friday of grocery shopping” and something clicked in my brain and triggered me to go into full out shopping attack mode. So I went to lunch with some friends and then decided that since my children were already awake when they should be napping, I couldn’t resist the urge to go to Bloom.

I spend $92, which is more than I had hoped to spend, especially for such a cleaned out store (I’m probably grateful they were cleaned out or my damage would have been much much worse) but I got a lot of great items, and what’s really cool to me is that I got a lot of QUALITY organic items for VERY VERY CHEAP, things hard to coupon for.

Here is a breakdown of what I got:

  • Almost 7lbs of organic Red Delicious Apples
  • 2.5lbs of Red Pears
  • 4 Breyers Ice Cream (my FAV)
  • 1 Turkey Hill Ice Cream (in my fav flavor from them)
  • 1 bag of chicken rawhides for my dog
  • 1 jar of Woodstock Farms Natural Almond Butter
  • 1 jar of Woodstock Farms Natural Cashew Butter
  • 1 jar of Cascadian Farm Organic Blackberry Fruit Spread
  • 2 jars of Smuckers Red Raspberry Jam
  • 2 Bottles of Juicy Juice 100% juice
  • 2 boxes of Ice Pops (no these aren’t healthy but they have their place in summer)
  • 1 big box of seedless raisins
  • 3 bags of mini boxes of seedless raisins
  • 1 tube of Webers Kickin’ Chicken seasoning (soooo good)
  • 3 bags of Goya Chickpeas
  • 1 bag of wooden bbq skewers
  • 1 pkg of Carr Whole Wheat Crackers
  • 1 pkg of Carr Table Crackers
  • 1 pkg of Food Coloring regular colors
  • 1 pkg of Food Coloring neon colors
  • 1 big pack of 4 colored sprinkles (score!)
  • 5 packs of muffin cup liners
  • 1 pkg of Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1 pkg of Whole Grain Fig Newtons (if you haven’t tried these, they are actually 100% better than regular ones, more chewy!)
  • 1 jug of 100% pure organic Maple Syrup
  • 2 bags of Raisinets (the cost of bringing 2 non-napping toddlers to the store with me)
  • 4 Cadbury eggs (not pictured)
  • 1 bag of Birds Eye Steamfresh Broccoli (not pictured – forgot to pull out of freezer for picture)

Whew! After typing it up, I feel much better like I really got a lot of quality stuff for the price!

Some notes about the trip:

I had been stressing this whole time about bringing coupons with me and was stalling because “I wasn’t ready” and I finally bit the bullet and went without and I’m glad I did, here is why:

  • There were oooodles of people, and they DID NOT CARE that I had 2 small children in my cart, I had numerous people bump right into my daughters legs and I was getting really ticked off about it. Bringing coupons into that mix would have been a nightmare.
  • There is NO dairy left AT ALL
  • Cereal gone, juice gone, chips gone, sugar, flour, meat and most produce were gone. And I cleaned out the apples ;)
  • Surprisingly there was a bit of coffee left, lots of spices, still a fair amount of canned items (I was surprised to find the raisins) and a lot of frozen pizza actually.
  • Most food items that were still there were store brand, not national brands. So coupons wouldn’t have mattered.

Bloom Update:

I’m hearing a lot of reports actually that they are thinking that most Bloom stores will not last beyond this weekend or a day or two next week once it goes 75% off. The likelyhood of them going to February 15th is very very slim, if you have interest, GO! I’ll be going again on Saturday morning as soon as they open to find out what’s left at 75% off. Hopefully you all can get out and find a few things!

I’d love to hear about what you got at Bloom, post a comment here or on my Facebook post and tell me what you scored for a great price, send me a picture, I’d love to see!

Sometimes You Just Don’t Coupon! My Wegmans Trip.

So I desperately needed to go grocery shopping yesterday. My pantry is pretty packed with essentials like rice, pasta, sauces etc., but as for anything fresh, well, that was a different story.

I used a grand total of 3, yes 3 coupons in this trip (2 for the Silk and 1 for the Chobani big tub). It’s a little difficult to get coupons for bags of apples and kale, but it doesn’t mean I won’t buy them.

I spend a grand total of $149.20, but this will likely get me through 2 weeks. I will need to spend about $25 more for some more milk, bananas and another loaf of bread etc. this weekend but I don’t mind spending $175 in two weeks, it’s under $100 a week and under my $400/mo food budget. I have plenty there to make sure we are eating right, and able to pack lunches for my husband.

Moral of the story/post: Not every trip is a massive savings trip, and don’t feel bad about it! Save where it counts and spend where it counts.

Home At Last! Yummy Michigan Products!

So after being gone for over a week, my kids and I finally made it back home last night. Yes we arrived to a house that was clearly occupied by a guy who’d been at home alone all week, so I have my work cut out for me later on in the cleaning department. Not to mention I gotta catch up on paying bills, clipping my coupons etc.

I did however get to bring home some of my favorite Michigan products, Vernors (now to hide some from my husband who will drink them all up), Better Made Sweet BBQ Potato Chips (he should be hiding these from me if he wants any) and a Faygo for each of us. Also my favorite Michigan Wine, St. Julians. YUM! I see bad for you food football snacking this weekend in my future.

I have also discovered that my contact form is broken. Ack! I’m not sure how long this has been broken but it seems that when anyone is emailing me via my contact form, it’s not giving me your email address. This should be fixed later on.In the meantime if you use my contact form, make sure to include your email address in the body to ensure I can respond.

Now, I should be back into my SuperNoVA routine here within the next week. The neglect has been horrible I know, Giant will be up this week, I’ll add in some late Harris Teeter specials as well. I have some exciting news too…. Ooooh I’m bursting to tell you all but I must wait ;)

My Target Toy Clearance Shopping Haul!

So I made it to two different Targets today and scored on some 70% off toys. I paid $75 for what I got today and I’m missing the most expensive toy from the picture. What’s not pictured is a HUGE 6 lane Hot Wheels track that was on clearance for $23.98 (down from $79.99!). But it’s in my car still. I managed to find some fun train stuff and some baby girly stuff. Not the best clearance selection I’ve ever seen but I found good things. The full price value of what I bought today would have been $250!

I Nearly Fell Over Looking at This Price….

So I went to my favorite grocery store ever, Meijer. I’m in MI visiting my parents and was just busting to get into Meijer. I’ll go later this week and shop clearance special, I did already snag a winter coat for my son on clearance for $15 for next year. BUT, I went to get some groceries for the week that are toddler friendly and I nearly fell out looking at the price of berries!

No, seriously LOOK AT THAT PRICE! 2/$1? I honestly thought they’d screwed up. I grabbed a couple. As well as some raspberries and strawberries and still thought it was a misprint until I saw it in a 2nd location in the produce dept. I think I could cry. Blackberries cost $2.50 for a 4-6oz package on a good day in Northern Virginia! Also, look at the amazing prices for Strawberries and Raspberries!

I know I’m being a slacker on my posts. Well, yeah. Sorry. But we are busy expecting a nice snowstorm here and we are ready to sit in the house and eat cheap berries until there is enough to make a snowman with! ;)

I Went To Costco Today…. Yikes!!!

Dog not included in purchase, though it probably would have made me feel better about my total ;)

So a big debate among couponers is whether or not warehouse stores/memberships are worth it. My personal answer to that is yes! I have a Costco membership and I used to have a Sam’s Club membership. When I was a full time working mom and could only do a minimal amount of couponing (diapers/formula etc.) I used warehouse stores heavily to save time, which was more precious to me when I worked full time and was away from my family so much and money was more plentiful with 2 incomes. It was a no-brainer.

Now that I’m a stay at home mom, I have time. But I still use Costco about 1-2 times a month. I can usually keep my monthly trips there under $100. I have very specific things I buy from Costco. I no longer buy toothpaste, toilet paper, dishwashing detergent etc. from there. No I get those for free with coupons. But there are things that are worth it to me.

Here are some examples:

  • Mexican Coke – It’s the only place you can get it (besides Sam’s Club) and my husband loves it. Even though it’s expensive and a treat he works hard for our money, so he gets what he wants to drink!
  • Arizona or Other Tea drinks – Here is one I avoided for a long time, but decided it was time to break down. My husband was spending too much money on the side buying a soda here or a tea there and I finally realized he was going to no matter how much I complained. So started buying them at a bulk rate to save money that I was bleeding out of my control. Now he takes one to work with him. It’s an expense, but it’s one I can control again (for the most part).
  • Fresh Vegetables/Fruits – I consistently find it’s better to go and buy most of my fruits at Costco. We go through A LOT of fresh fruit and this is where I can buy it in big amounts. That big bag of fresh broccoli florets came to be $1.46/lb. I haven’t even seen it that cheap on sale here for the fresh broccoli and I’m paying JUST for the nice tops here. I’m getting more for my money and we eat A LOT of broccoli.
  • Frozen Fruits – How often have you seen coupons for these? We make a lot of smoothies, and I can get a big bag for cheaper than multiple bags without coupons at the grocery store
  • Bread – Now this is a personal preference and I don’t always do it. If we are low (and we were), I will buy it at Costco because they are the cheapest place for the brand I prefer. But I’m always watching for it to be on sale at the grocery store too and I will stock up and freeze it when it is.
  • Kids Clothes – I love Carters PJ’s and I usually buy them the footie fleece pajamas at Costco because it’s the cheapest place for them.
  • Spices – If there is something I know I use a LOT of. Like that big thing of curry powder. Yeah I put curry on everything! That will only last me a few months. Garlic is another one.

Today I am preparing myself to make about 16 batches of fudge tomorrow morning, so I decided I was going to bulk buy my supplies at Costco today too. Normally I would not purchase sugars, chocolate chips, peanut butter, etc. at Costco, but with these 2 (see pic below), I decided that time was money, and while I had them entertained with a lemonade and a hot dog, I’d just bite the bullet and get it all done in one spot. And my poor dog was out of dog food. It hurt me to buy it at Costco when I know I can get a better deal elsewhere, but again, in the interest of time this morning.

Now that my bank account has been depleted, I’ll catch up on some sales because I need them! Tell me if you have things you get better deals on at warehouse stores over couponing!

My .08 Peeps Stocking Stuffers From Walgreens!!!

So I ran into Walgreens today for just a moment only to snag this Peeps deal. Unfortunately the coupon is no longer available to print. But if you did print it, run out and get some cheap/free Peeps before the week is out!

My total was .08 which was all tax (can’t really see my receipt, but I tried lol). It feels pretty good to pull out a dime and then get change! It was flawless, she even scanned the Walgreens coupon first before my 3 manufacturer’s coupons and it had no problems at the register. I’ll have 3 kids at my house for Christmas and each of them is getting a snowman set and a Christmas tree set in their stocking.

Target Deals: Xbox Controller, Ghirardelli, Wrapping Paper & My Shopping Trip!

So I went to Target last night to tap into a couple of the deals that are out right now and for a good excuse to use the $10 gift card with $50 purchase coupon. So I went for the Spongebob wrapping paper, Ghirardelli candy and an Xbox wireless controller.

The Ghirardelli Chocolate bars are $2.00 (though I opted for the bags of individually wrapped for $3.49) and you can stack these to get the candy bars as low as .50 each:

Then I also wanted to get some SpongeBob paper. You can stack these 2 coupons to get the wrapping paper for just $1 since it is priced at $3 at Target. I will warn you, my manufacturer’s coupons did not go through at Target. I did however buy the correct item so they put them in for me. The Target coupons went through with no problems.

  • $1/1 Dora or SpongeBob Wrapping Paper (no longer available to print, hopefully you already did)
  • $1/1 Dora or SpongeBob holiday items Target Coupon (prints out as ornament or wrapping paper)

So my shopping trip:

  • (1) Xbox 360 Wireless Controller – on sale $39.99
  • (1) Ghirardelli Candy Bar – $2.00
  • (3) Ghirardelli Candy Bags – $3.49 each
  • (2) SpongeBob wrapping papers – $3.00 each
  • - (1) $10 Gift Card with $50 purchase coupon (give this first!)
  • - (1) $10 off Xbox controller Target Coupon
  • - (4) $1/1 Ghirardelli seasonal product Printable
  • - (2) $1/2 Ghirardelli chocolate candy items Target Coupon
  • - (2) $1/1 Dora or SpongeBob Wrapping Paper
  • - (2) $1/1 Dora or SpongeBob holiday items Target Coupon

= $36.98 (after tax and REDcard discounts factored in)
+ $10 Target Gift Card for my next purchase!
So really like spending $26.98 for all that! Which is more than worth it JUST for the Xbox controller.

Weekend Update: My Laptop Shopping Drama!

Hi! I hope everyone’s weekend was great!

My weekend went so-so, but I’d classify it more on the good side. There were highs and there were lows. The highs were that there was time spend outdoors with my kiddos and that my husband and I broke down and set up the play kitchen in the playroom well before Christmas and “ate” lots of “dinnertime” crazy concoctions my kids “cooked” up. We did some much needed housework and I think I vaguely have a good handle on what I need to get for upcoming Thanksgiving festivities food-wise. I got lots of personal couponing done and organized for my Thanksgiving trips and I got to work on a few background things for the site (a few surprises I’ll roll out later on tonight!) as well.

The biggest up and down of my weekend though was laptop shopping. I’ve been in the market for a bit and decided I was going to try this Best Buy exclusive Toshiba. I mean, the price is right for what I wanted. I purchased my first one (yep, first one) on Friday night, like 10 minutes before the store closed. After a quick run to Toys R Us for some of the 2-day sale items I rushed home only to find within a minute of starting my new computer that I had dead pixels! WHAT!??! Fine. Irritating, but the next morning I exchange. Best Buy was GREAT about it. No hassle. I return home, SAME THING! Different pixels, but definitely more dead pixels! Turns out Best Buy has got an exclusive on these from Toshiba this year and a ton were mass produced, like MASS PRODUCED, which does leave some room for error and lemons. Now I saw this computer up and running in the store, and from everything I did with it at home for the short time I did have it, it looked great.

I’d say if you are looking at a laptop this year and look at this one, know you could be taking a risk. If you are willing to accept that risk because of the awesome price and knowing that Toshiba usually produces good machines, then by all means give it a go! My luck isn’t actually that bad, and I got 2 bad ones right off, so I was ready to try another option.

After returning the laptop again and promptly telling them NO MORE of that one. I went home and considered my options. My husband helped me this time and we decided to go and irritate everyone in Best Buy with our two crazy running wild children. But I did end up scoring a decent deal on this HP Pavilion instead! I’m in LOVE! I think the mess ups with the other computers were just signs pointing me in the direction to this one. It’s amazing and I think my hubby is a little jealous of my new toy since he played with it (he said he was “setting it up” for me) for about 3hrs the first night.

So, I’m going to be playing weekend catchup now that it’s naptime in my house and it’s (reasonably) quiet. In just a couple hours I’ll have to fulfill my promise to a little boy who is waiting (should I say, refusing his nap waiting) to make some M&M cookies and some homemade sausage & ricotta pizza for dinner (pics later maybe, I know you want the recipe too!).
